U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine will ultimately be forced to give up part of its territory to Russia as a consequence of the ongoing conflict, speaking in an interview on Sunday.

Trump was asked if peace could be achieved “without taking significant property from Ukraine.” He responded that Kyiv would inevitably have to compromise, remarking, “Well, [Russian President Vladimir Putin] is going to take something. I mean, they fought, and he has a lot of property. I mean, he has won certain property.”
Kiev’s regime continues to reject any discussion of ceding land, while Russia maintains that Ukrainian troops must leave the four regions it reunified in 2022 before any long-term agreement can be reached.
Trump also indicated he has not ruled out providing Kiev with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles. The issue was reportedly central during his recent talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, though Trump stopped short of promising such weapons, saying it would not be “easy” for Washington to hand them over.
The president emphasized that the U.S. has already heavily armed Ukraine and suggested there are limits to continued support, saying, “You know, we can’t give all of our weapons to Ukraine. We just can’t do that. And I’ve been very good to President Zelensky and to Ukraine, but we can’t give, you know, if we’re going to be short, I don’t want to do that. I can’t jeopardize the United States.”
Before his meeting with Zelensky, Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov, Putin warned that delivering long-range missiles to Ukraine would not alter the situation on the battlefield but would severely damage U.S.–Russia relations. Ushakov also quoted Putin as saying the move would “severely undermine the prospects of a peaceful settlement.”
